2017 has proved to be the turning point for seasteading. The book and our efforts in French Polynesia have been featured across the political spectrum in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNN, The New Republic, ABC, BBC, Reuters, KQED, EcoWatch, FEE, Guernica and a long list of other major new sources.
The world’s first seastead should open in 2020 instead of 2050 because of the outreach and leadership of The Seasteading Institute. We did this with a two-person staff and a teensy budget.
But here’s the thing. At the peak of our accelerating success, we are low on funds.
Fortunately we just received an exciting opportunity. A new anonymous donor, impressed with what we accomplished, offered to match any donation made by June 30 up to $60,000.
I wrote him a detailed 3-year plan for The Seasteading Intitute that asked for significant funds to execute it. If we can match his 60K pledge by June 30, he may become a major donor over the next 3 years.
During that time we hope to spread seasteading to other parts of the world and take a significant practical stride to freedom on the high seas.
Our new donor liked the plan, but he looked me in the eye and challenged me to demonstrate that our community can match the first step. He expects a report from me July 1. I don’t want to to disappoint him.
