Happy New Year! We here at The Seasteading Institute have been working hard over the holidays to ensure that future years have more hope and possibility for innovative societies than past ones. Here’s what we did in December:
Need help generating speaking engagements and seasteading socials
I will be making a number of trips in 2009 for TSI-related business and speaking engagements, and I need your help to maximize the number of people I can meet and reach on each of these trips. There are two major ways you can help:
- Get a talk or speaking engagement for me. Groups that might be interested include futurists, transhumanists, libertarians, and engineering & architecture departments at local colleges or universities.
The Ancestral Environment and Seasteading
Eliezer writes on Overcoming Bias:
One of the primary principles of evolutionary psychology is that “Our modern skulls house a stone age mind” (saith Tooby and Cosmides). You can interpret all sorts of angst as the friction of a stone age mind rubbing against a modern world that isn’t like the hunter-gatherer environment the brain evolved to handle.
Ephemerisle without laws would be like Burning Man without art.
I was recently asked: “Is the plan still to have no rules during Ephemerisle, or does having it in the SF bay mean that there will have to be some rules?”
I replied:
There will definitely have to be rules based on US safety laws / Coast Guard regulations. There may be other rules as well.

TSI Website development volunteers needed!
Our volunteer website development team needs more help!
Developers: We’ve got a lot of great community-building features we’d like to build — forum upgrades, UI improvements, photo feeds, digg-style ratings for blog and forum posts, donation functionality, and lots more. The bottleneck right now is programmer time. Drupal or PHP experience are a huge plus, but enthusiasm and a willingness to learn is all that’s required!
Welcome Liz Lacy as Director of Development!
I am excited to announce that Liz Lacy is joining The Seasteading Institute as Director of Development. Liz has worked at several non-profits in roles such as preparing Annual Reports, writing grant requests, and coordinating volunteers. She brings some much-needed non-profit experience and adds valuable diversity to our set of political viewpoints.
Reminder: Second Life Social on Wednesday
From our Second Life wiki page:
As an experiment, we are going to replace the in-person December 2008 social with a SL event on Wednesday December 17th at 7PM GMT, which is 8PM for most of Europe and 11AM PST. This will be at Jesrad’s area: South East corner of the region Everlite.
