The Seasteading Institute

Suggest and vote on key sections for the book revision

One of my major projects during the summer and fall of this year will be getting the seasteading book in shape for publication (initially via POD). I have a giant pile of links and ideas about little sections to write – there is an arbitrary amount of nuance, fun speculation, and neat technologies that could go into the book. But I don’t have time, and even if I did the final result would be hugely bloated. So I need to start by 80/20ing the book – nuance and fun can be added later.

I want your help.

Media update

Well, the Discovery Channel show was pretty disappointing, they only used 5 seconds of the hour+ they filmed of me, although some ideas from the book were featured. I will restrict my comments here to saying that I do not favor many elements of their floating city design. The Reason Magazine article, on the other hand, is excellent! Mainstream vs. niche media? TV vs. print? Who knows. But we will not be posting a video of the Discovery Channel cameo, you should just go read the Reason article instead.

TSI Booth at Maker Faire – Video

This time-lapse video of Maker Faire by Bill Sherman was shot from right outside the TSI booth, so its basically a time-lapse video of us! You can see Liz throughout the video, as well as several volunteers, and a little of me (in the bright light blue shirt) towards the end.

Seasteading book wish list

If you ever feel like purchasing gifts for TSI and our Seasteading Book Library, here is my seasteading wish list on Amazon:

If any of these books interest you, one option would be to buy it, read it, and then donate it to us when you are finished.

Seasteading Board Game

How does a German express support for seasteading? By designing a board game, of course!

Marc-Felix Otto, part of a small German-speaking Libertarian group centered around the magazine eigentümlich frei, and who translated Machinery of Freedom into German, has created a game called “Pacific – Issue and Defend Your Own Law”. He describes it as:

Each player represents a “legislative agency”, defining his or her “law” along 8 “paragraphs”.

Condo Cruise Ship Challenges

Thanks to a connection of Wayne’s, he & I got to talk to a long-time ResidenSea resident this afternoon, and I now know enormously more about the challenges of operating a condo cruise ship. Fascinating!

The challenges are daunting. ResidenSea, where the condo fees are like $200K/unit/year for the smaller units, is barely able to handle the logistical issues of traveling constantly, all over the world.
