On February 2 2019, the first seastead in international waters was established off the coast of Thailand. It was called XLII by Chad and Nadia who lived on board. A few months later, the Thai Navy confiscated the structure. Our video series, “The First Seasteaders,” chronicles the story of Chad and Nadia’s harrowing escape.
Chad Elwartowski is now the Chairman of the Board at Ocean Builders in Panama. They have three seastead prototypes floating in the water. The seastead was shown to be safe when engineer Rüdiger Koch set a new Guinness World Record for living 120 days underwater. Chad and Nadia have welcomed two children into the world. Today we celebrate the milestone of the first seastead and how quickly seasteaders can change the way people think about living on the ocean.
We are working to make the next Ocean Builders seasteads safe for the Chads and Nadias of the future. Support our quest for a maritime flag. A maritime flag will bypass antiquated land-based governments and go straight to private businesses who value innovation and liberty.
