Our
designs are much smaller, and thus the path to funding them is
much clearer. Our current estimates suggest that a complete,
viable seastead for around a hundred people could be built for
one one-thousandth of the Freedom Ship's proposed cost, or about
$100,000 / resident. Our platforms may not be a mile long, but
which do you think has a better chance of getting built? We'll
take modest and real over huge and imaginary any day.

[Tue Jan 13 12:42:51 PST 2004-12] Mike Lorrey (NOSPAMmlorrey@yahoo.com.NOSPAM):
Keep in mind that every house boat is a baystead. That level of settlement is nothing new and rather ho-hum, no really new sociology here. Building a texas-tower type structure for so few people would not necessarily be considered cost effective given the alternatives. What is more rare are apartment-boats and may offer enough of a critical mass for a community to form. Building the baystead with 5-10 apartment units would raise the concept above the mainstream aquatic real estate.

Ah, but houseboats are not shaped like Baysteads. People will notice it because it looks strange and different. (People don't judge things based on their sociology :) ). We do plan to have significantly more area than a houseboat, something like 5K - 15K sq. feet.

yes but can you farm on a houseboat?
growing your own food is the first step to autonime (spl?) ^^
