For most of our existence, humans have lived in tribes or
extended families. This helps make better use of scarce
resources such as housing, heating, etc. Only in the past
century has the first world achieved the wealth for each nuclear
family to have its own dwelling, appliances, and utiltiies.
While there are clearly advantages to this, some people find it
unsatisfying to be so isolated. The Co-housing, or Intentional
Community movement has developed in response to this. An IC is
any group of people deliberately living together, which can mean
anything from a college co-op to a commune.

[Thu Sep 9 19:10:36 PDT 2004-252] John Perdue (NOSPAMjnhoh@earthlink.net.NOSPAM):
most people do live in a situation where they don't share their kitchen with others outside their family, like the people next door don't come over and use the stove or your car . the neighbor's got a washing machine, so do you. everyone's got a car, refrigerator, stove, etc. let's ask why. it's not just because of wealth, because attempting to live this lifestyle has lead many people to greater poverty and also to real destitution. the lifestyle of independence and privelege was sold to us. the idea that it is everyone for themselves and that there will be winners and losers came along with the new market of things. wealth in the form of new products is where it is at, is the message. this was sold to us and is being sold to us so well that it is assumed to be correct.
communal living may not be a more grown up way of living but it does recquire one to be more grown up.
