A risk with such a venture is that a corporation who is being
infringed upon might encourage their friendly national navy to board
the seastead and shut it down. As will frequently be the case, the
seastead must balance the profit and attractiveness of unique
approaches with the potential problems.

This is foolish & shortsighted (which means some people will be predisposed to it, I'm sure). The realities of living on a Seasted will drive innovation in hydroponics technology, closed systems, aquaculture and much more. The Seasted's ability to patent these processes and derive income from them will allow them to do very well financially. For this to occur the Seasted will have to be on good terms with the world's patent-enforcing power (the US govt).

Applying for patents is expensive.
Hydroponics is already bing reasearched heavily at NASA, they'll get the patents, seastead won't.

For the most part the income from patents will probably be less than the expense of licensing the damn things and the hassles of doing so (or even being told that you can't licence them) for all but a few seasteads.
